I agree with you 99% the only thing I dont agree with is its more than just mass delusion. Its mass hysteria combined with a phycological disorder of trying to make one self feel like they are part of something bigger than just themselves. So they make outrageous claims to garner attention.
One of my friends who is a professor is writting a paper on people who make outrageous claims to get attention. The internet is a big part of it and his findings are really scary.
